Fgura-Qrendi 3-0

George Faure’s team Fgura United obtained a deserved win over Qrendi in a match they dominated throughout the second period.

After nine minutes Fgura went close with Shantlo Felice crossing for Clint Ellul whose header hit the crossbar. In the 16th minute a shot by Matthew Spiteri was well saved by Piscopo and two minutes later the Qrendi custodian was again in action as he blocked off a header by Carl Camilleri.

Qrendi were close through Winston Fenech with Fgura coming back on two occasions through dangerous attempts by Eric Lia and Christian Bordieri. A minute after the restart Qrendi were very close through Kurt Grima but gradually Fgura dominated the proceedings and after wasting an easy opportunity through Matthew Spiteri, they deservedly broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through an opportunistic goal through Clint Ellul.

On 72 minutes Daniel Said increased Fgura’s lead and in the 82nd minute they made it 3-0 through an Eric Lia direct free-kick.

Two minutes from time Qrendi went close through a point-blank shot by Karl Agius II whose shot was blocked by Ranier Farrugia.

At the end of the game the Fgura United players carried a banner to protest on an alleged doping case involving another Third Division side.

Zebbug-Zurrieq 0-2

Zurrieq won their third match in a row in the Play-Offs to gain a merited promotion to the Second Division. Zebbug ended a poor season as they have been relegated to play 3rd Division football next season.

After 14 minutes Zebbug gained a free-kick which was taken by Keith Farrugia but none of his team mates failed to take advantage in front of goal.

On 20 minutes Zurrieq were very close through Michael Abdilla and two minutes later Clive Shomba hit just high over the bar.

Zurrieq kept the initiative with Robert Bajada having a close-range which was saved by Attard but the Zebbug keeper was beaten on the stroke of half-time with Zurrieq’s striker Daniel Zammit heading in from close-range.

Zurrieq remained the better team throughout the second period and after going close through Daniel Zammit, they managed to increase their lead on 62 minutes through a beauty of a shot by Joe Lia.

Zebbug replied through two free-kicks by Keith Farrugia which were saved by Azzopardi and in the 85th minute referee Tonna sent off two players, Josef Felice (Zebbug) and Clayton Gatt (Zurrieq) following an incident between these two players.

At the end of the match the Zurrieq numerous supporters celebrated their team’s promotion success.
