Two brothers were jailed for one year suspended for two years after they pleaded guilty to seriously injuring a man and slightly injuring another one when a fight broke out during the celebrations marking Hamrun Spartans’ promotion to the Premier League.

Marco Cassar, 33, from Bugibba and his brother Claudio Cassar, 21, from Marsa, pleaded guilty to seriously injuring Sandro Cauchi from Mgarr in High Street, Hamrun.

They also pleaded guilty to slightly injuring Thomas Pellikano from Birkirkara, assaulting and threatening a police officer, breaching the peace, disobeying police orders and swearing in public.

The court heard how the incident took place during the events celebrating Hamrun Spartans’ promotion to the Premier League.

Before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, the two brothers pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.

Magistrate Clarke said that although the brothers filed an early guilty plea and had cooperated with the police, they had already been accused of similar crimes in the past and had already been granted the opportunity to change their way of life.

She said that the court was giving them the last opportunity to stay away from trouble and jailed them for one year suspended for two years. Moreover, she ordered that they be placed on a supervision order for one year during which they cannot go to any football stadium or participate in any celebrations related to football.

Finally, she ordered the brothers not to approach or molest Mr Cauchi and Mr Pellikano and bound them by a Lm500 fine in default.

Police Inspector Mario Tonna prosecuted. Dr Kris Balzan appeared for Marco Cassar while Dr Jose Herrera appeared for Claudio Cassar. Dr Malcolm Mifsud appeared parte civile for the injured parties.
