Malta Independent Thursday, 24 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Last weekend, game two of the Fr. Tony Parnis Cup was played at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

In the men’s category after winning game one, Fleur de Lys beat Kerygma to win the second match of the three match series and thus win the cup.

In the ladies league, Paola Hibs Candy beat Flyers 3-0 to win their fourth trophy this season and seal an exceptional year for the club.

Fleur de Lys met Kerygma enjoying a one match lead after beating the latter 3-2 in game one.

This match was decisive as Kerygma needed a win to keep their hopes alive and hope to play game three.

Kerygma were without their regular setter Josef Pirotta and instead Mark Soler, who had a good performance, was called to do the job. Kerygma were dangerous with attacks by David Galea and Robert Balzan but on the day, Fleur de Lys were too strong with Brian Vassallo and Eric Sciberras combining well with setter Kevin Spiteri.

Winning the Fr. Tony Parnis Cup was special for Fleur de Lys players as it was the late Fr. Parnis that founded the club.

In the ladies section, after having won game one 3-2, Paola Hibs Candy found little opposition in a depleted Flyers team.

Steve Farrugia had a number of key players missing for this game and had no option but to put an experimental team on court with Lindsey Cordina in the role of setter.

On the other hand, Hibs coach David Bonnici had all registered players available and they were determined to end the season on a high hoping to brush off Flyers challenge as quickly as possible.

The match was balanced at the beginning of each set but it was Hibs that always dominated the end of the three sets with good performances by Alison Borg Hayman, Delicia Farrugia and Carmen Gauci.

Hibs Candy won the match 3-0 thus closing an exceptional season for the club.
