Villa Francia in Lija is being restored by the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry, with the aim of giving visitors an insight into the national culture and traditions. Minister Ninu Zammit visited the site to see the work in progress yesterday.

The villa used to be better known as Villa Preziosi, and research has shown that the structure was built gradually, with its original use being that of a hunting lodge. Building continued into the second half of the last century.

It is a two-storey structure, with a front and back garden, the latter containing an irrigating water-wheel, a water reservoir and various small buildings that lead to the main structure.

Because the building has national historical interest, studies were made to identify the level of damage and deterioration it had sustained. The studies included a survey of the villa, research about it and research of old plans.

It is intended to retain the historical identity of the villa so that it can be used for various functions, including government meetings and conferences. All the façades will be restored, and the floors refurbished. The paths in the gardens will be re-paved and the niches and fountains will be restored. The original tiling will be retained.

A lift is to be installed, as well as ramps, so that the villa will be accessible to everyone.
