“FAIR offers a sense of security to consumers as well as fairness in prices. This scheme assures that the adoption of the euro takes place in a smooth manner which guarantees further success,” David Casa MEP said during a visit to shops that adopted FAIR in Birkirkara.

FAIR was launched by NECC and forms part of the information campaign for consumers and business people. FAIR is part of the dual pricing exercise. Although the dual pricing is obligatory from 1 July, FAIR is encouraging the business community to start displaying dual pricing now.

David Casa said FAIR is preparing the Maltese people for the changeover on 1 January 2008. Three thousand businesses have adopted FAIR on a voluntary basis since November 2006.

David Casa talked about the Slovenian experience, “In Slovenia the euro had a very good experience. This was thanks to the informative and familiarization campaigns before adopting the euro.”

The Nationalist MEP said that the European Commission asked the NECC to assist their Cypriot counterparts in adopting a similar initiative. “This is another commendation for the work being carried out by the government and NECC,” he said.

The FAIR scheme offers security to the consumer when they shop. This fosters trust in the consumer-shop owner relation and is important for a smooth changeover.

Shop owners and consumers who spoke to David Casa all expressed their satisfaction on the informative campaign about the euro.
