I agree with your line of thinking (The ‘monti’ saga – TMID, 23 May) with regard to the strong position taken by the government on the Valletta open air market issue.

What you failed to mention is that the man behind this strong position was Investment, Industry and IT Minister Austin Gatt – and this is why the government did not budge from the original position taken until the goal was reached.

Other ministers might have succumbed to the demands of the Union Haddiema Maghqudin and would have possibly even panicked when they held protest marches. Some would have also given in once the situation protracted for so long. But Minister Gatt once again showed his true form and simply stood firm.
