During the last few weeks, issues of national importance have been turned into a farcical situation by many of those involved.
The first came from the FKNK in its last press conference, when it announced that at an extraordinary general meeting to be held shortly, it is going to propose that a clause in its statute on political independence is going to be removed. Whom does FKNK think it is fooling?
And what about the self-regulatory method to monitor hunting practices? It’s about time that hunters are self-disciplined in their behaviour when practicing their hobby. The FKNK should be the first to admit that, on numerous occasions, some of their members have defied the basic regulations of hunting and trapping.
Another situation was brought about by the Opposition Leader who envied the overwhelming approval by many NGOs and the general public on the government’s decision to turn Xaghra l-Hamra into a national park. Dr Sant visited the Marsa Golf Club and said that Malta needs two or three golf courses. But he did not say where these courses should be located!
The same goes for the monti problem. Dr Sant went to Freedom Square to show solidarity with the protesting hawkers. But in his comments he was typically evasive and never came up with a clear solution. The most important thing for him and his party is to be anti-government in everything under the sun.
A common buzzword being used by many of our politicians is “U-turn’. The biggest U-turn recently was the one made by MLP deputy leader Dr Michael Falzon. After he showed courage in exposing what was taking place in his own party, he made the biggest U-turn the following week, when he said that it was the Nationalist Party that had invented the whole story.
His outburst at the MLP club in Rabat, sitting right next to his leader, was recorded and so cannot be denied.
One final farcical situation was the extremely positive EU report on the nation’s financial situation, which led to the approval of the European Commission so that Malta joins the eurozone on 1 January. While everybody welcomed the report, none of your regular contributors found time to comment on the success obtained by the Nationalist government, which in turn means prosperity for the islands.
