The last paragraph of the letter “Poverty: Should we turn a blind eye?” (TMIS, 27 May) by Angela Abela and Fr Charles Tabone should have read:

“Helping people, especially children, one fifth of whom are poor, get out of the poverty trap is certainly the way forward. It means making a conscious investment in our human capital. Of course this in no way precludes politicians from taking steps to curb abuse. This is what other European countries, with comparable statistics, strive to do, instead of sweeping the unattractive reality of poverty under the carpet, and falsely reassuring themselves that the poverty phenomenon does not exist.”
