I read with some surprise Daphne’s courageous article about Dun Gorg’s miracle (TMIS, 27 May).

I believe in miracles, the wonderful works of God. “Miraculum” means a wonderful, astonishing and admirable happening. I see it everywhere because I admire God’s work in nature as much as, if not more than, his supernatural ones. I often see combinations of both types.

I agree with Daphne that happenings that seem to have no natural cause now, may be found to have one later on. Our scripture professor used to say that all the miracles God worked through Moses to free his people from Egypt may have had a natural explanation, but they are still a sign of God’s hand in the way they coincided to bring about their escape.

In the case of physical healings, the more natural causes I discover, the more I praise and thank God who is the author and lord of nature.

Regarding the miracle, which was the final touch in the process of Dun Gorg’s canonisation, I compare it to a small red cherry on the icing of a big round cake. The real miracle of Dun Gorg was his life and work. All the people who knew him without prejudice canonized him long before the Pope did.

So if someone steals and eats the cherry we don’t have to be so angry at her since we still have the big cake to enjoy!
