The notice of a meeting to be held by MEPA today, PA 7902/05, says “Demolition of existing commercial complex”. That should read “Demolition of Ramla Bay, the most beautiful part of the Maltese Islands”.

Unfortunately the locals, especially Nadur and Xaghra residents, do not really know what is in store for Ramla, that the scenery around the legendary Calypso cave will be lost for ever, that Calypso Cave itself would be in danger of collapse, that the clear waters of Ramla Bay are going to be polluted. The Xaghra people, through their elected members in Xaghra local council, had previously and more so now objected to the development.

The application should have been refused in the first instance for all imaginable, environmental and legal reasons. When the word environment was unknown, applications by the previous owners to develop part of the area were always refused and that led to their selling off the land.

Wake up Gozo, wake up Malta. Show your disapproval and condemnation against the spoiling of what is left for our children and future generations to enjoy. Let them not condemn not just MEPA members, but all of us. As quite a few Xaghra emigrants said “That would be the end of our annual visits to Gozo”.

Where is Gaia Foundation who are the guardians of Ramla, where is Wirt Ghawdex and all the rest? Do they condone or do they condemn any development in this virgin area? MEPA members, stop the nonsense, honour your responsibilities and commitment to the whole nation.
