European Snooker Championships: Impressive Start for Maltese players in Carlow

Simon Zammit and Alex Borg, Malta’s representatives in the 2007 EBSA European Snooker Championships in Carlow, Republic of Ireland, made an impressive start winning their first round-robin group matches.

After he beat Tomas Kejla of the Czech Republic 4-0 on Wednesday night, Simon Zammit had the better of Mindaugas Skurvydas of Lithuania by the same score yesterday.

Zammit is heading Group H on frame difference. Four players out of eight will qualify into the last 32 knock-out stage. Zammit's third match will be tomorrow at 2pm local time against Krzystof Wrobel of Poland. Wrobel lost his opening match yesterday against Tom Gleeson (Rep. of Ireland) 2-4.

Meanwhile from Group A, defending champion Alex Borg played his second match late yesterday evening Jonny Fulcher of Switzerland. Borg started the defence of his title on Wednesday with an easy win against Henrikas Strolis of Lithuania 4-0 in 45 mins hitting some fine form with breaks of 100, 93 and 50. Borg's third match will be tomorrow at 1600hrs when he plays Mika Karhu of Finland.

Highest break so far in the Men's Championships is 136 registered by Jordan Brown of Northern Ireland.
