Bank of Valletta is the official sponsor for the History in Scale event being organised by the Society for Scale Modellers.
The bank’s sponsorship was presented by Joyce Tabone, Manager responsible for Quality and Corporate Social Responsibility at Bank of Valletta to Ivan Cocker, from the Society of Scale Modellers.
Founded in 1981 by a group of modelling enthusiasts, this non-profit-making society continues to rally members who painstakingly dedicate their time and efforts to models in scale. The masterpieces displayed are the fruit of months of hard work, from research to construction or scratch building and detailed paintwork.
“Since it was set up, the society has never looked back,” said Mr Cocker, while outlining the highlights of the 26 years of SSM in Malta, “We have always sought to remain active and encourage interaction among our members. It is thanks to them that our society has continued to grow over the years.” Besides weekly meetings for its members organised at their club house, SSM has also set up its own website. Among the most prestigious awards that the organisation has brought home, it has twice won “Best of Show” in IPMS Word National UK.
As the name suggests, this exhibition is a showcase of highly-detailed and realistically-finished replicas of military aircraft, armoured vehicles, figurine and dioramas in miniature. Over the years, this annual event has continued to appeal to a wider audience, as local and foreign viewers are attracted by the detail of the miniature artefacts. Rather than merely an exhibition, History in Scale 07 proposes to be a cultural event in its own right. In order to add further zest to their displays, for this year the SSM organisation has chosen the Malta Memorial Hanger of the Aviation Museum in Ta’ Qali, of which it is a founder member, as the venue of their Annual Model Expo. This means that the miniature masterpieces will have a few of their original vintage counterparts from World War II to provide a suggestive backdrop.
