Ceramist Sina Farrugia Micallef is once again setting up a solo show at the National Museum of Fine Arts, this time exploring the theme of vessels, containers and receptacles.

Titled Il-Bieqja u... the main items on show in the NMFA's Contemporary Hall will be bowls; not the mere common bowl used as centre pieces for fruit or other miscellaneous items, but bowls as artworks in their own right.

In fact, Sina explores and presents the various stages constituting the bowl – from the hemispherically-shaped object which has a distinct function, to a decorative and artistically relevant item which has no other scope and purpose other than an aesthetic one.

Her bowls have also been created utilising a variety of textures, at times harsh and rough almost as though a layer of material or cloth were embedded within the medium's layers, and at other times given a glossy finish.

Moreover, these bowls are not just abstract in theme - many reveal figures, forms and even tell a story. Sina's work really, has always been about portraying some kind of narrative, yet as time goes by her work betrays her own story rather than that of myths or others who have touched her life.

Sina is also showing a number of wall-hangings in this show, some in series and others tying to the theme explored in her bowls.

Il-Bieqja u... will be on show at the NMFA until 22 November. The museum is open daily between 9am and 5pm (last admission at 4.30pm).
