A seminar on the coordination of social security in Europe discussed the following main topics: recent developments and activities of the trESS (training and reporting on European Social Security) project, by Prof. Yves Jorens from the University of Ghent; the state of affairs regarding the proposal for implementing EU Regulation 883/04 on the coordination of social security systems, by Ms Els Vertongen from the European Commission; recent developments in national case-law and changes in national legislation and national implementation, by Mr Joseph Camilleri, from the Directorate General – Social Security; the implementation of the European Health Insurance card in the Maltese health system, by Ms Shirley Sultana from the Ministry of Health, the Elderly and Community Care; a case study derived from the implementation of Regulation (EC) 1408/71, by Mr Mark L. Musù, from the Ministry of the Family and Social Solidarity; and the electronic exchange of information between institutions, by Mr Malcolm Scicluna, from the EU and International Relations Unit, Directorate General – Social Security.

The seminar was organised by the Directorate General – Social Security in conjunction with the European Commission and the University of Ghent in Belgium and was attended by members of the social partners, NGOs, judges, lawyers and independent experts and others interested in the area of social security.
