Malta Independent Saturday, 9 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Defending European Champion, Malta’s Alex Borg recovered yesterday from the shock defeat suffered Thursday night on the second day of the 2007 European Snooker championships.

Borg was stunned by Jonny Fulcher of Switzerland who had breaks of 63, 64 and 69 en-route to a 4-0 win. This ended Borg’s record of 25 straight wins in European Championships having won all 12 matches two years ago in Poland and repeated the feat last year in Romania. Borg won his first match here in Carlow on Wednesday but yesterday's result stopped Borg’s winning streak.

However Alex Borg yesterday afternoon recovered from this setback when he easily beat Mika Karhu of Finland 4-1.Borg was back to his splendid form winning the fifth and final frame with a century break.

Tomorow Borg will be in action again at 1300hrs local time when he plays against Anthony Brabin of Cyprus.

Meanwhile from Group H, Malta’s other representative Simon Zammit also suffered his first defeat when he was beaten by Kryztof Wrobel of Poland 1-4.

The key frame in this match was the fourth which Zammit lost on a respotted black to go 3-1 down. Zammit had earlier won his first two matches both with identical score of 4-0.

Zammit will play his fourth match today at 1000hrs local time when he plays against Tom Gleeson of the Republic of Ireland. Gleeson has won all his 3 matches so far.

Highest break so far in the Men’s Championships is 136 made by Jordan Brown of Northern Ireland.
