In the second day of the trap event during the ISSF World Cup 2007 in Lonato, Italy, Maltese trap shooters did very well among the record of participants of 500 shooters from 82 nations.

Jeff Tonna,a newcomer for the Malta Shooting Sport Federation,after hitting 72 out of 75 in the first day, yesterday managed 23 and 24.

This score of 119/125 placed him 10th among the world’s best trap shooters. Only one target away from entering the barage finals among the top six.

Horace Micallef,who also made a comeback to the shooting scene after a couple of years, managed 117/125, 5 targets more than the 112, MQS, he was shooting for. Nicky Carabott managed 108/125 and Jason John Aquilina managed 100/125.

Massimo Mola of Italy took the gold medal with a world record score of 124+23=147/150, with Adam Vella, taking silver with 121+12=142/150. Vella, a second generation Maltese shoots for Australia.

Alexy Alipov for Russia took bronze with 120+21=141/150 M. Singh of India placed 4th after a tight shoot off with Fabrizzi of Italy and Alfaihan of Kuwait. With this 4th place, Singh won a quota for the Beiging olympics 2008. Jeff Tonna was so close,yet one target made it so far away.

Tomorrow will be another interesting day in Lonato for Malta when William Chetcuti will be shooting for 150 clays Double Trap among the world’s best double trap shooters. In the coming weeks The Malta Shooting Sport Federation will also be taking part in Slovania ISSF World Cup and Granada ISSF European Championships.
