The marine rescue team unit of Nature Trust (Malta) were called to investigate the finding of a dolphin carcass at Pembroke last Sunday, which apparently was brought in with the strong currents.

The animal was found at the tip of the shoreline wedged between the rocks, which made it quite difficult for the team to analyse the whole body. However, from the preliminary examination, it was concluded that the animal was a female Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Unfortunately, it was not a fresh specimen and its skin pigmentation (there were no significant markings to help identification) was all gone. It was also discovered that although there were no evident injuries, there were some holes in the body which could be the result of a firearm.
