The Malta Young Sailors Club is organising an Open Day at the Club on Sunday 17 June between 10.30am and 3.30pm. The club premises are situated in Tax-Xama in St. Paul’s Bay (next to the Government Primary School).

Boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 years who visit the club will be given a brief introduction to the Optimist Sailing Dinghy. Weather permitting, visiting children will be invited to experience half an hour of sailing in an Optimist with the help of experienced sailors from the club, under the supervision of the club head-coach Jean Paul Fleri Soler. The Optimist is the sailing dinghy used by medal wimmers Sean Borg and Ella Fleri Soler during the GSSE games held in Monaco during the first week of June.

The Optimist Sailing Dinghy is, quite simply, the dinghy in which children of the world may learn how to sail. At the Athens Olympics, over 60% of the participating skippers and 70% of the medal winning skippers were former Optimist sailors.

During Open Day, information will also be given about the Optimist Sailing Courses for Beginners organised by the Club during summer as well as the rest of the Summer Sailing programme for both beginners and the more experienced sailors who have done the sailing courses in previous years and would like to continue or start sailing once again. Summer sailing for beginners consists of 8 hours (2 half days) of sailing theory and practice every week, for 10 weeks during July, August ad September. All sailing equipment used during these sailing courses including the sailing boat will be provided by the club.
