Memorable Double for Sliema: Vodafone Under 16 Final

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Sliema Wanderers managed to win the double after having won Section A honours earlier in the season and newly-promoted St Andrew finishing in the runner-up position.

Sliema dominated the first period while St Andrew were a better outfit after resumption as they came all out to try and save the game.

The first threat came from St Andrew’s as Jordan Calleja served Gavin Scott on the right flank who then crossed to Michael Calleja but he drove out from inside the area.

From then on it was all Sliema who created all the occasions up to five minutes before the break with St Andrews having only two occasions to their credit during the whole first half.

Simeon Yordanov served Mark Scerri with a cross from the left but Saints keeper Alexei Cauchi saved his header from inside the area and also neutralised a cross from the left by Shawn Micallef after a Yordanov through ball. On another occasion, a freekick from Scerri went over the bar.

Sliema player Ray Attard was shown the yellow card for a late tackle on Timothy Martin and from the free kick by Neil Chetcuti the ball was headed away by a defender. Cauchi then saved in two attempts a free kick by Kane Farrugia with the ball nearly escaping his grasp as it was helped by the strong wind.

The Blues kept pressing and Andre Gove served Mottola with a through ball in the area but lost control of the ball and was shown the yellow card for simulating a penalty. Yordanov served Miguel Ciantar just outside the Saints area but he was fouled and from the free kick taken by the same player, the ball sailed over the bar.

Five minutes before the break Sliema deservedly took the lead. After a run down the right flank, Mottola served Ciantar who netted a beauty with a rising shot in the top left hand corner of the net.

The last action before the break came from St Andrew’s when Jeremy Fleri Soler served Gavin Scott on the right flank and, after beating two opponents, he executed a perfect cross and the ball was neutralised by Sliema keeper Michael Incorvaja.

Sliema created the first action after the restart. Gove served Mottola with a through ball but he was fouled outside the area and from the free kick by Scerri the ball hit the defensive barrier and was eventually cleared.

Cauchi then came to his side’s rescue as he effected a diving save on a shot by Ciantar after a cross from the right by Mottola.

The score became 2-0 on 50 minutes. Ciantar floated a perfect ball in the Saints area from a free kick with the ball being partially cleared. Yordanov was on hand to blast the ball home from the rebound.

The Saints reacted and they were awarded a free kick on the right edge of the area which was taken by substitute Andrew Amato and the ball missed the upright. On 57 minutes Sliema were denied a third goal by the woodwork when from a cross-shot from the right by Mottola the ball thumped against the bar with Cauchi beaten.

At the other end, substitute Nicky Vella Petroni entered the area after beating a defender, he crossed the ball from the right to Michael Calleja and Incorvaja neutralised the ball in two attempts.

Five minutes before normal time St Andrew’s pulled one back. Fieri Soler served Calleja with a through ball in the area and after he was pushed Vella Petroni converted from the spot with a strong rising shot.
