Your resident columnist Daphne Caruana Galizia should indeed be thankful and grateful that she is allowed to express her freethinking without suffering the full wrath and sanctions of the Catholic Church of Malta.

Much as she repeatedly makes frontal and vitriolic attacks on the Malta Labour Party, she should remember that, were it not for the emancipatory sustained campaigns of the said Malta Labour Party in the late 1950s and during the 1960s, culminating in the agreement reached in 1969 based on six fundamental points that brought about the beginnings in fact and at law as to the separation of State and Church in Malta, she would not have been able to express her views without retribution.

Formerly she would have been silenced most unceremoniously.

Liberal thinking and expressions in Maltese and Gozitan society owe their origin only thanks to the Malta Labour Party.

This is an irrefutable fact of the social, economic and political history of these islands.
