Malta Independent Monday, 18 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Armed Forces on Saturday rescued another boatload of 26 immigrants after their vessel encountered difficulties.

The Armed Forces of Malta said it received a notification from the US Navy Command Headquarters in Naples in Italy that a boatload of irregular migrants had been spotted some 24 nautical miles northeast of Malta.

An Air Wing Alouette and the Melita 2 search and rescue boat were dispatched to the scene because the boat was in imminent danger of sinking.

The US Navy’s ship Donald Cook which was in the vicinity, remained in the area until the AFM personnel arrived to carry out the rescue of the 25 men and one female who were on board the boat.

The rescued migrants were brought to Haywharf Base as German journalists from ZDF TV and ARD Radio along with French FRANCE 24 TV were present to report on this latest arrival.
