According to the PN who derives great pleasure in mentioning how lucky we are to have Malta as a European member state at every opportunity, we have now managed to accomplish everything the EU requests of us, so much so that when the euro “enters” our “domain”, we should be as happy as chimps having a tea party. What they fail to admit is that they have literally crucified a nation with taxes and sold the “family jewels” lock, stock and barrel.

Those family jewels brought about with blood, sweat and tears by a Labour government in order to strengthen the economy sector. What bothers me and should bother the rest of us is what “sacrifices” we have to make in order to satisfy the criteria the EU demands from us.

VAT rose from 15 per cent to 18 per cent to control this country’s deficit. Pure logic leads one to believe that in the not-too-distant future, in order for us to keep on stabilising this country’s deficit, the VAT will probably be “promoted” to 25 per cent.

Up till this moment in time, there has been no guarantee that an increased VAT or more taxes will not be imposed on us. As the election draws nearer, we will probably be hearing one whopper after another.

The PN, critical of the opposition at all times, will try to convince the voters that they will somehow manage to achieve miracles. No doubt they do not realise that though one can fool the people most of the time, one can definitely not fool all the people all the time.

Their promises have now become too washy; they have become too stingy with giving but expect us to be dazzled by the droppings they hand over to us. What irks me most though is their arguments of how we are lucky enough to become members of the EU but omitting to point out the price we all have to pay.
