Spinning Society’s mind

Malta Independent Tuesday, 19 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

After three years of Malta’s accession to the European Union, MLP leader Alfred Sant once again claimed that he still believes that partnership is a better choice for Malta. Once again, he showed the Maltese society that he does not want us to fully benefit from EU opportunities like other EU citizens.

Alfred Sant, once again, made another u-turn on the Maltese electorate. It comes as no surprise since the MLP has no consistency in its political agenda. Still the claim that partnership is a better choice once again brings up a lot of ifs and buts.

If Alfred Sant does not believe in EU membership, but prefers partnership, why did the MLP contest the MEPs’ election?

Is it possible that this was done to hinder Malta’s success story in the EU? We already experienced this strategy in the case of the EU funding for the restructuring of the Sant’ Antnin recycling plant.

Dear readers, this is no joke. Since we are a democratic country, all opinions are accepted but I cannot accept people that try to manipulate or hinder the national interest. Even while addressing the European Commission President, Dr Sant preferred to speak in a partisan manner rather than the national interest first and foremost.

Manipulating people’s minds with lies is disrespectful. The MLP propaganda apparatus is trying to damage our success stories by disseminating uncertainties.

This party does not believe in the Maltese potential in the EU but still makes use of the benefits. The Maltese socialists’ only interest is power and they are willing to go against national interest to achieve it.

They are willing to hinder the economic growth process just for the sake of gaining rule over our country.

Politics that want to keep our children in the dark from information and knowledge while they treat society with an eye-for-an-eye policy, which only favours those close to Alfred Sant’s clan to flourish and prosper.

Had Alfred Sant’s will materialised, we would not have received funding to restructure and reconstruct roads. Our youths would be unable to fully benefit from EU programmes. For sure, we would not be able to ask for assistance with irregular migration. We would not have the support of President Barroso, who will be putting our case forward, both in the European Council summit and the African Union, where he will put the case forward with the Libyan authorities.

He is also working hard to gain all the resources needed to start the Frontex operations.

The same must be said for all other funding that our country has benefited from in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, NGOs, entrepreneurs and the list goes on.

The worst nightmare would have been that of not being able to get EUR855 million for projects that will improve our standard of living.

This is the true meaning of Alfred Sant’s partnership – passing out on opportunities and benefits both for our country and for ourselves. This means that we would have been isolated from reaching EU standards to compete in global markets.

European Commission President Barroso himself declared Malta’s European success records, when he said that Malta has proved itself even though there were currents going in the other direction. Another certificate of our success was announced in these days, with Malta in second place when it comes to low inflation.

The EU for the Maltese citizens goes beyond funding. It offers possibilities to contribute in the consultation and decision-making processes. This means that although our island and population are small when we represent our nation we are treated as equal.

With the partnership illusion, this would have not been possible. With Dr Sant’s fixation nowadays, we would be treated as Europe’s second-class citizens, receiving alms only after all EU citizens share what is theirs by right.

No, dear readers, the MLP has not changed. They still want our country to lag behind. They still want to waste Malta’s growth potential.

The Nationalist Party is the political party in Malta that, when entrusted with our country’s leadership, led our society to historic achievements. The political party not only invested in our country but also in the people. Only the PN may guarantee further success for us, for our children and for our country and go in front of the electorate with a record of accomplishment and a list of challenges changed into success stories. Since the early days of the Nationalist Party, its leaders and politicians have actively worked in the national interest.
