Malta Independent Wednesday, 20 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Union Haddiema Maghqudin has written to the government asking for an indefinite work contract for public sector employees who have had a definite contract for more than four years.

It said that a legal notice came into effect last Friday which gave employees on a definite contract the right for an indefinite contract. In public entities, the situation related to employees on the Maltese sports council, the foundation for social welfare services, the tax compliance unit, the employment and training corporation, and all local council employees.

The union also noted that another legal notice would take effect on 1 July, relating to part-time employees who would no longer be exploited if they worked less than 20 hours a week. Part-time workers who worked at least eight hours a week will be entitled pro rata, to all benefits which full-time employees had.
