Amid the irregular migration controversy dominating local (and foreign) news headlines, the quintessential question to ask anyone protesting Malta’s ongoing intake of refugees would probably be “What if it was you?” This question usually prompts some awkward moments of silence in place of an answer, but the message behind it is loud enough and clearer than crystal. There are of course, several other ways to get this message across, and for Maltese musician Chemical Orphan (aka Glen Cachia) music proved to be the perfect medium.

Specifically with this theme in mind and partly inspired by his time spent working with refugees in Malta, Cachia has recorded an original song called precisely What If It Was You? The song is being officially released locally today on the occasion of World Refugee Day, and pushes home the message of racial equality and compassion over a rhythmic pop groove with new-wave tendencies and vocals accentuated with a touch of Reed and Byrne. More importantly however, is the simple-but-direct lyrical approach, spelling out the message for everyone to hear, ponder over and act upon!

This evening, between 6pm and 8pm, the Open Centre in Marsa will be the venue for a celebration of World Refugee Day.

Entrance is free of charge and traditional food will be available at subsidised prices. There will also be live traditional music, singing and dancing performed by the African residents of the centre. On Saturday, a team made up of the African residents will play against a Maltese selection for the African Challenge Cup.
