The Department of Information said the largest-ever delegation from the House of Representatives had several meetings at the European Commission last Thursday during a 24-hour visit. The delegation was led by Jason Azzopardi, chairman of the Committee on European and Foreign Affairs.

Meetings were held among others with Commissioner Borg, responsible for fisheries and maritime affairs, Commissioner Almunia, in charge of economic and monetary affairs and Commissioner Pielbags, for energy.

The members of Parliament raised various issues of particular concern to Malta. The topics discussed included the introduction of the euro, renewable sources of energy and the importance of research in enterprise and industry. Delegates raised issues on irregular migration, tourism, women workers and equal opportunities for all, while they also highlighted a number of proposals which were put forward by the Commission, such as better regulation, European tourism policy and the internal market.

The delegation was composed of Joseph Abela, Michael Asciak, Stefan Buontempo, Joseph Cuschieri, Angelo Farrugia, Roderick Galdes, Gavin Gulia, Silvio Parnis, Anton Refalo, Joseph Sammut and George Vella.
