President Eddie Fenech Adami said that non-governmental organisations and local councils had an important role in society because voluntary work was the cornerstone of democracy.

Addressing members of NGOs in Kercem as part of activities during his official visit to the locality on Wednesday evening, Dr Fenech Adami said that at a time when society was becoming more individualistic, voluntary work created a sense of community and helped in the search for our roots.

Before meeting the NGOs, Dr Fenech Adami visited the Santa Lucija community where he attended Mass and afterwards met the residents. He also met young artist Austin Camilleri and carpenter Guzeppi Borg.

The President’s official visit continues on Sunday.
