The Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise is duty bound to voice the concerns received from its members on the spate of power cuts experienced in various parts of Malta in the past days. These concerns relate not merely to the fact that power cuts lead to loss of business for chamber members, but also to the increased possibility of damage which this can have on machinery, equipment and other electrical goods such as air-conditioning units and computers, amongst others – consequentially leading to more costs and disruption on business.

Notwithstanding this, the chamber said in a statement that it is comforted by the recent assurances given by Enemalta Corporation chairman that the corporation is looking into new technologies to solve this issue on a long-term basis. It is of paramount importance that these efforts on the part of our national energy provider materialize in the shortest time possible to avoid any undesirable recurrences.

We are entering into the peak tourism season and power-failures coupled with ensuing water-shortages could have disastrous effects on the local economy, the chamber said.

The chamber reiterated that a cost-effective, clean and uninterrupted power supply is a basic pre-requisite for any business to operate and thus, the authorities must fully appreciate the adverse affects power failures exert on the local business community.
