I have been reading with total dismay and disappointment, however no surprise, the recent MEPA decision to approve further development near Ramla l-Hamra in Gozo. Browsing through your newspaper I also picked up the story about the crane blocking the short runway at Malta International Airport and could not believe my eyes when I read the excuses MEPA gave for issuing the licence to go ahead with construction without the need to consult with the relevant airport authorities. The fact that MEPA is able to get away with its decisions only through the production of defensive press releases indicates to me that something is seriously wrong – not only within MEPA but also with the Minister responsible for it.

I may have missed some stories but it seems to me that MEPA is a law unto itself.

When I was last in Malta I often heard the phrase "pajjiz tal-Mickey Mouse" (Mickey Mouse country) and, because of some mistaken belief and pride in being Maltese, I used to deride those who continually used this phrase. Maybe they were right all along.

It is clear to me (even from such a distance) that MEPA is a totally dysfunctional organisation that should either be abolished or totally re-organised. Heads should and must roll! And on the Ramla issue – even if it means overriding MEPA’s own rules to ensure that Ramla and its environs are protected forever, the relevant Minister should take action immediately. The little bit of environment left should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations.
