Valletta and Malta captain Gilbert Agius yesterday signed a new contract at Valletta.

It is a deal which sees him bound to the citizens for another four years – till he turns 37.

New Valletta FC president Victor Sciriha confirmed the deal was on. “It is no extension to the previous contract. It is completely new. There seems to have been nothing signed before, not even a verbal agreement, as was being said,” he claimed.

At the weekend, it was rumoured that some differences had cropped up between him and City’s new administration and at least two clubs, Sliema W. and Birkirkara, had been alerted.

Sciriha also confirmed to this newspaper that the club will, in all probability, not extend Branco Nisevic’s contract. The president said: “The Serbian defender has not accepted our offer and it seems as if he will not be retained by the club now. Instead, we are looking for another foreigner. We already have made some contacts and hope to be able to register him after 2 July.”

Meanwhile, it is thought Valletta are still eyeing a local central defender whom they wish to add to their ranks.

The citizens have already signed Josef Mifsud from Msida SJ and German midfielder Heiner Backhaus complimented by the return of the free-scoring Argentine striker Sebastian Monesterolo following his unsuccessful stint in Kuwait.
