The inauguration of the new civic amenity site in Mriehel proved to be a very fashionable and spectacular event, with an onsite fashion show using clothes made out of recycled materials. The event was organised by WasteServ Malta with support from the Rural Affairs and the Environment Ministry and the Spanish Embassy.
In his speech, WasteServ Chairman Nick De Giorgio expressed the hope that having such a positive activity linked to the development of their waste management facilities may contribute towards a better acceptance of WasteServ projects by the general public.
The evening took off with a short performance by Etnika using body percussion and a dynamic and physical repertoire of sounds and produced on the body including footwork, claps, slaps, finger clicks integrating elements of flamenco. Local talent was also present in the form of an exhibition by MCAST Institute of Art and Design at Targa Gap. The work displayed included experimental works by students from various art, design and design crafts certificate and diploma courses, among them weaving and other thread crafts. All the pieces have been fabricated from partly or completely recycled textiles and other materials.
The clothes used in the fashion show were designed by FOCUM. arquitectura-moda designs by Josep Crivillers of Barcelona, by Mar Gaviño of Majorca, designs from the school ESDI of Sabadell and also from the school EDA of Majorca.
Addressing guests, Minister George Pullicino also expressed his appreciation towards the Spanish Embassy for their support in bringing the clothes over from Spain. He was also presented with a donation for the 34U campaign by WasteServ CEO Ing. Magri. The investment for the development of these facilities amounts to Lm700,000 while the cost of containers, equipment and vehicles used in these centres amounts to Lm602,000. This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The next three civic amenity sites are planned in the areas of Luqa, Hal-Far and tal-Kus, Gozo.
