Julian Calabrese has a mix of Celtic and Italian roots. He was born in the UK and somewhere along the line, he spent many years on our lovely islands.
To say that living in various countries and absorbing the different cultures has influenced him and his work would be an understatement. Situations that take place in widely differing places lead to unexpected twists and turns of fate, emotions, experiences and style, in turn affecting his individual expression and relationship with the canvas. This is all notable and can be seen clearly as a first layer in the development of his art over the past 11 years.
Calabrese turns to the canvas when he has a story to tell.
When seeing his work, one can easily see and feel what he wants to deliver, making it an exceptionally captivating experience. His landscapes, colours and moods draw one in, making one almost taste, smell, hear and feel them. It is as though one is actually there, inside the painting itself.
Calabrese’s use of colour and technique represents the fact that nothing is constant – nothing but change. With further reference to layers, it is possible to see something new every time one re-approaches the painting, all designed to inspire the imagination.
His preferred media of choice is acrylic paint. However, he often uses mixed media and textures, materials that appeal to him and fit into the right place, making things happen at the right time, working harmoniously together.
Intensity is a key element or layer in all his paintings, relating to the angels and demons on display – his stories. One can see a thousand thoughts in the eyes of his portraits. If one looks deeper, one can see that Calabrese captures every thought, for himself and for others to notice. Given enough time, it will come as no surprise to be overcome by one of these paintings.
