HSBC Malta has joined forces with other national organisations in an effort to step up environmental awareness among individuals, as well as to instill collective efforts in favour of sustainable development and to combat climate change during Environment Week.

“HSBC’s activities strive to promote the idea of individual and collective action in favour of sustainable development,” said Shaun Wallis, HSBC Malta’s CEO.

To celebrate World Environment Day held worldwide on 5 June, keen HSBC employees held a Dress Down Day to collect funds for environment projects supported by the HSBC Cares For The Environment Fund (HCEF).

HSBC employees also had a chance to view a documentary on marine life in the Mediterranean, at the Eden Cinema Complex in St. Julian’s. The special screening of the Planet Sea Production Journey into the Depths of the Mediterranean was sponsored by the Rural Affairs and Environment Ministry, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and the HCEF in collaboration with Forestals.

Viewing was also organised for hundreds of children from state, church and independent schools, accompanied by their teachers as part of World Environment Week activities.

This documentary offers a spectacular visual experience of marine life found in the seas around the Maltese archipelago, where over a hundred living creatures are beautifully captured. Copies of the film were distributed to all state, church and private schools in order to raise environmental awareness amongst the public.

On a national level the HCEF was also present through its participation in the “echo environmentfest” organised by the ministry. The HCEF stand provided the public with information on its initiatives and commitments to serve as a catalyst for further thought and action on a number of environmental issues.

The HCEF has also committed to assisting the Environment Ministry in the creation of a brochure containing tips for reducing greenhouse gases and fighting climate change through intelligent use of domestic appliances and vehicles, and the consumption of energy and food.

These brochures will be distributed to all households in Malta and Gozo in the near future.
