A visit to RTK Studios

On 24 May, the Friends of the Library were treated to a special educational outing.

A group of about 12 students from Year 5 and Year 6 accompanied by Bro Patrick, the school librarian and the school head Mrs Mariella Vella visited the RTK Studios in Blata l-Bajda, part of the Media Centre Complex of the Church in Malta.

Fr John Avellino who was to be our guide for the morning met us at the entrance of the RTK studios. He told us that the studios have been in function since 1992 and that RTK is short for Radju ta’ Kulhadd.

We first visited the printing room where a large computerised machine printed out coloured photos while another smaller machine was in the process of making booklets. From the printing room we moved on to the newsroom and saw four journalists collecting news from all over the world and preparing the daily news bulletin to be read on the radio.

Fr Avellino then explained what went on in all the four studios and how these studios are soundproof to minimise external sounds from entering the studios. Although we were told that the fourth studio is the largest of the four we were not prepared for the vastness of this studio. Over here a band of over 30 people can easily fit in to give life music recitals.

The highlight of the morning was when we were allowed to enter the first studio while a life programme was on air. We were also lucky enough to take part in this programme during the last few minutes and we do hope some of our friends and relatives heard us giving our comments.

Back at school Bro Patrick treated us to a drink and snacks in the school’s canteen. We would really like to thank Bro Patrick for organising such interesting and exciting outings and we are all looking forward to the next educational day out.
