Birkirkara, still recovering after international defender Kenneth Scicluna decided to join Valletta on Tuesday evening, are now facing the possibility of losing another of their stars - flank defender Roderick Briffa.

Considered to be among the best players produced locally in the past few years, Briffa is understood to have requested an improved contract to stay on at Birkirkara.

Earlier reports that the star was a target for Valletta and Sliema were quashed by Birkirkara themselves who said that Briffa was not for sale.

However, a Birkirkara FC official, who did not want to be identified, told The Malta Independent yesterday, that ‘the club was not in a position to break the bank to accede to any player’s request’, making it almost certain that the Stripes would not be accepting Briffa’s demands.

It is still to be seen what will happen after this latest development.

The same Birkirkara official also told The Malta Independent that there had been no official enquiries over a possible transfer for four players who do not form part of the club’s plans this season. These are Etienne Barbara, William Camenzuli, Clint Micallef and Mark Anthony Bonnici.

The same official said, however, that there had been at least one ‘unofficial’ enquiry about Barbara’s availability.
