I refer to Antoine Vella’s letter titled “Remove the trees and save St John’s” TMIS, 1 July).

First, I wish to assure Mr Vella that Din l-Art Helwa is a totally non-political organisation that has always declared its position on matters concerning Malta’s cultural heritage and the environment without fear or favour.

As to the removal of the ficus trees near St John’s Co-Cathedral, Din l-Art Helwa will be guided by advice given to the authorities concerned. If the advice is that the trees are causing damage to the Cathedral, then we shall naturally support their removal in order to avoid further harm to this historic and outstandingly important monument.
