The 2007/2008 football season gets underway today with the first match of the Euro Challenge Cup, being played at Ta’ Qali, between FA Trophy winners Hibernians and League runners-up Sliema Wanderers (kick-off 8pm).

This triangular competition provides the three Maltese clubs taking part in the UEFA competitions the chance to warm-up for their upcoming difficult encounters.

Both Sliema and Hibernians are expected to field their new signings for today’s match. Matthew Bartolo, who has just left Hibernians to join the Wanderers, will be already up against his former team mates. Another Sliema new face is former Floriana defender Ian Azzopardi.

Meanwhile, Hibernians have signed a new foreigner - Argentine striker Julio Cesar Alcorse - who may also be included in their line-up. Udo Nwoko returns for the Paolites after spending a good part of last season on loan with champions Marsaxlokk.

The latter, will meet the losers of today’s match on Wednesday, or Hibernians if today’s match ends in a draw. The final game will be played on Friday.

Due to refurbishing works being carried out on both sides of the Enclosure Stand (West Side) the MFA wishes to inform the public that entrance for these three matches will be from the Millennium Stand only.

VIP card-holders can use the usual entrance to the VIP area from the West Stand.

Meanwhile earlier this afternoon, the draws of the BOV Premier Division League, First Division League, Second Division League and Third Division League for season 2007/2008 will be held at the Centenary Hall, Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali at 1.15pm.
