The new EU funding programme LIFE+, that will allocate over EUR2 million a year for green projects in Malta, was launched yesterday by Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino.

Mr Pullicino, speaking during an information seminar for those who are interested in submitting projects, said that LIFE+ is a unique opportunity to create integrated projects for the good of the country’s environment.

The programme will focus on nature and biodiversity – with special focus on bird conservation in the wild, conservation of flora and fauna, the development of environmental governance and policies affecting climate change, quality of life, natural resources and waste and, finally, creating awareness about environmental themes.

Mr Pullicino explained that LIFE+ continues from where the previous programme, LIFE, that was concluded last year, left off.

However, he said, the projects that will be chosen this year will address Malta’s environmental priorities.

The minister urged those present not to submit isolated projects, but projects that were the result of collaboration and synergy between various public entities – including local councils – and private ones.
