Maltese clubs are to benefit from an amount being paid by UEFA to the MFA in the form of solidarity payments from the Champions League revenue.
The amount to be received by the MFA this year amounts to EUR400,000, approximately around Lm170,000.
It is the annual contribution by UEFA which globally this year, amounts to EUR25,080,000.
The top three receiving countries among UEFA’s 52 affiliated associations are Switzerland – EUR890,000 – Norway – EUR820,000 – and the Republic of Ireland – EUR710,000.
Malta’s three teams in the Champions League and UEFA Cup last season, will be benefiting from the usual amounts.
In fact, national champions who did not reach the UEFA Champions League group stage received EUR160,000, while clubs that took part in the UEFA Champions League first and/or second qualifying round received EUR100,000 per round, except for the clubs who qualified for the group stage. No solidarity payments were made to clubs who took part in the third qualifying round.
The two clubs who took part in the UEFA Cup received an amount of EUR70,000.
2006/07 club payments
Overall, in the Champions League, UEFA has issued payments amounting to EUR579,600,000.
As winners, Milan were the biggest beneficiaries with a global amount of EUR39,592,000. Liverpool, as finalists, pocketed a global amount of EUR32,218,000, but Chelsea pocketed a little more, that is, EUR34,662,000.
In the UEFA Cup, UEFA made payments totalling EUR34,670,000 with Sevilla, the winners, pocketing the amount of EUR6,251,500, including EUR2.500,000 for winning the final, and Espanyol, the runners-up, EUR5,311,500.
