The government was committed to protecting the country’s historical heritage, and refurbishment projects were being taken in hand in different localities to promote its appreciation, said Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit.

Speaking at the opening of the newly refurbished Mall Garden in Floriana, Mr Zammit said that one of the sectors being taken care of was public gardens, in order to create free spaces where people could go for recreation.

He said that there had been considerable investment in historical heritage, with the restoration among others of at least 25 chapels or churches, monuments, historic buildings, bastions and fortifications.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said the Mall Garden was further proof of the government’s vision of improving the country, based on three pillars: conserving and restoring the historical heritage, improving the standard of living and carrying out infrastructural projects to improve the country’s appearance.

Using structural funds, Dr Gonzi said, the government would be spending over Lm12 million in conservation and rehabilitation projects.
