The Labour Party should treat the residents of San Gwann properly, not as second class citizens, the councillors’ college of the Nationalist Party said in a statement yesterday. San Gwann was deteriorating badly and was being buried under rubbish, it said in a statement.

During the past 16 months of a Labour majority on the local council, the executive secretary had been removed and there had been three acting executive secretaries. The skips contract, which had not been the subject of complaints, had been awarded to a contractor who bid Lm11,000 more than the lowest offer. The new contractor had been the barman at the MLP club in San Gwann, the college said.

There were deep divisions among Labour’s councillors and the deputy mayor had voted against the mayor seven times, to the extent that the mayor had since sought a vote of confidence, the college said.
