In response to Ms Camilleri’s letter “Pornography on hi5” (TMIS, 8 July), we agree that hi5 is a social networking website highly popular with adolescents and adults alike.

Originally, it was a harmless site in which individuals could share their details, including photos, and get to know others via the Internet. Unfortunately, it is possible for individuals to upload false identities on this site and pretend to be somebody they are not. Individuals can also upload material that might make others feel uncomfortable. This has given rise to improper use of hi5.

Since last year, Supportline 179, run by Agenzija Appogg, has been operating a hotline on which the general public can report child pornography as well as malicious contact, such as that occurring in chat rooms and e-mail. Individuals can report the abuse either by phoning 179 or by completing an on-line report form, which can be accessed at www.appogg.gov.mt. Details given will remain confidential. Reports containing illegal material are then forwarded to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Malta Police Force.

Most importantly, parents should follow the advice given by Ms Camilleri – to keep an eye on what their children are watching while chatting on the Internet.
