Yesterday was another memorable day for the Maltese swimmers at the FISEC games as they won three bronze medals and also broke national records.

Andre Agius was again among the protagonists as he placed third in the 100 metres breaststroke, stopping the clock at 1:10.36

Melinda Sue Micallef won bronze in the girls' 100 metres breastroke in 1:20.1.

The third bronze medal was won by Nicole Cremona in the 50 metres backstroke in 32.37 seconds. This is a new national record in a small pool.

Cremona also participated in the 200 metres breaststroke and placed fourth.

Talisa Pace placed fourth in the 100 metres freestyle and managed to break the national record in 1:01.52.

Another national record was established by Robert Micallef who clocked 29.47 seconds in a 50 metres butterfly heat.

In table tennis Malta yesterday won a silver medal in the girls' doubles. Jessica Pace played alongside Dutch player Thomesin Marieki to beat two Portuguese players 3-2.

In basketball Portugal beat the Maltese girls 67-29 in a match dominated by the winners.

Christine Tonna and Leanne Sciberras were Malta’s best scorers with eight points each.

Today Malta faces Spain in a fifth place play-off.

In Handball, the Maltese boys recovered from two consecutive defeats to obtain a 23-23 draw against Spain.

Malta’s drawing goal came in the dying seconds of the game but there were periods during which Malta could have ensured a win.

Mark Borg scored six goals, Lyden Zerafa got five and Peter Naudi netted four times. The other goals were scored by Mihajlo Savic (three), Luke Zammit (two), Maurice Meli (two) and Robert Cachia (one). Today’s opponents are Portugal.

Meanwhile the FISEC delegates met yesterday to discuss the possibility of introducing new members. Negotiations to include new members from Greece, Palestine, Ireland, Brazil, Jordan, Poland and Romania.

Future editions of the games were also discussed and it was mentioned that, following the Malta games next year, Portugal or California could host the 2009 games while the 2010 games may take place in France. Holland is a possible candidate for the 2011 games.

The Fair Play awards were introduced by vice-president Louis Borg while Bro Martin Borg fsc made a presentation about the organisation of next year’s games in Malta.

It was also determined yesterday that the next General Assembly of the FISEC games will take place in Paris in November.
