After three weeks of relaxed training to recover from Ironman Switzerland Dermot Galea is once again training at full blast in preparation for the next events.
According to Galea, Ironman Switzerland was a fantastic experience, even more so finishing with a good time and result overall. “I understand that I need to improve a lot more my cycling and running to get a faster time. Now I am targeting Ironman Western Australia on 2 December.
“This is quite a huge goal I have set myself especially since I need to go to the other side of the globe. If Ironman Switzerland costs a fortune imagine what this will cost, so I am trying to look around for some financial help this time.
“My aims are two. My biggest wish is to qualify for Ironman Hawaii 2008 and my second aim is to get the best time ever achieved by a Maltese over such distances.”
Galea has changed a bit his approach in training to improve his power on the bike. He said: “The course in Western Australia is a fast flat course but tends to be winding as well so I need to be able to push a hard gear all the way through the 180km bike segment.
“I am already excited at this opportunity and really looking forward to train hard for it. At the moment temperatures are not helping in Malta with 36-38 degrees but I am working my way around it with early morning and late evening sessions.
“My aim is to work a lot on my speed and power till October when we have the National Triathlon Championships. After that I will work on a big block of training to prepare myself well for the Ironman.”
