A total of 150 scholarships are being offered by the government to students with the highest qualifications who choose to continue their studies in recognised private institutions in Malta. The scholarships fall under the Malta Government Scholarship Scheme – Undergraduate Courses.

Under the scheme, students will receive an average of Lm2,440 over four years, with science and technology students receiving an average of Lm4,020 during the course. Gozitan students qualify for an additional subsidy.

The government is voting about Lm170,000 for each

academic year, rising to Lm500,000 by 2010, when some 600 students will benefit.

Education Minister Louis Galea said this was the first time that assistance was being given to students choosing to study in recognised private institutions and selection would be on the basis of points awarded according to academic merit.
