Open Letter to Andrew Calleja (MEPA Chairman)

Malta Independent Sunday, 29 July 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Dear Mr Calleja,

We the undersigned each bought a plot of land at a high price. One of the reasons was that the plots lie opposite a green area that therefore cannot be developed. Not only is it a green area, but it is also part of the Brocktorff Circle.

Wonder of wonders, somebody bought this green area, applied to MEPA for a building permit, and believe it or not, it is recommended that a DCC be granted.

Having read the DPA report, we fail to understand the arguments in favour of the project. Moreover, since when is permitting building outside development zones, effectively changing the local plan, the prerogative of a case officer?

And how on earth can a development in such a sensitive area like the Brocktorff Circle be approved without the request of a bank guarantee.

If this is not a question of two weights and two measures by your organisation, then what is?

Dear Mr Calleja, take a look at this application (PA 07946/05), and judge for yourself what the man in the street will think when such things are allowed to take place.
