Labour Leader Alfred Sant yesterday said that the Gasan Group managed to find investors for Melita Cable who paid more than the investors who the government had found to purchase Maltacom and Mid-Med Bank.

Speaking at a political activity yesterday, Dr Sant said the price which GMT Communications Partners paid for Melita Cable – EUR167 million – was far more than the price the government got for selling Maltacom and Mid-Med Bank and this should serve as a lesson for Prime Minister Gonzi, he said.

Dr Sant said the National government sold the country's two important assets at a miserable price.

The Labour leader said that a new Labour government would be led on three basic principles: transparency, accountability and efficiency.

He said that Dr Gonzi’s government is not transparent and neither accountable because not even the Nationalist ministers are accountable for their work.

Moreover, he said, the lack of efficiency is evident at St Vincent de Paul residence for the elderly where they are being left without air conditioning.

He said that now that the election is drawing closer, the PN-led government has embarked on a “fake exercise” to give the impression that a lot is being done. He said that once in government, the MLP will ensure that more events such as the MTV concert are organised.

Dr Sant also referred to today’s event in which the MLP will publish all of its papers prepared over the past three years in one document which will eventually be used as the electoral manifest for the upcoming general election.

He said the PN, which criticised these position papers and plans, copied large chunks of them and included them in the pre-budget document which has been published for consultation.

Dr Sant said the MLP is proud that the PN-led government included these ideas “stolen” from the MLP plans but warned that it will not be the PN who will implement them but the MLP following a victory at the next general election.
