The second leg of the Fanta beach volley tournament was held on Sunday at Pretty Bay, Birzebbugia.

Nineteams took part in an event that featured both male and female categories. In the men’s category, a repeat of the last tournament final was played with Aaron Stivala and Paul Vella overcoming the challenge presented by the experienced Gozitans Angelo Bonello and Mark Buttigieg. In the ladies category, Alison Borg Hayman and Gertrude Zarb beat Maria Demicoli and Dorianne Bonnici in the final to win their second beach volley tournament.

Hibs duo Borg Hayman and Zarb met Demicoli and Bonnici also in a repeat of last weeks final. The Aloysian’s girls pushed harder this time, and after losing a close the first set 21-19, they managed to get a healthy lead during the second set through a five point advantage with a set-point in their favour. However, good attacks by the Hibs players saw them reach their opponents at 19-19 and eventually turn the tables by taking the second and final set 21-19.

In the men’s category, the level of beach volley was high with the two best teams making it to the finals. Both teams played great volleyball but it was Vella and Stivala who won the final in two straight sets committing fewer mistakes (21-16 and 21-17).

The next Fanta beach volley event will be held on the 12th August at Pretty Bay. Another tournament, this time for mixed teams will be held on the 26th August. For more information, one should call 9947 7717.
