Trailer-load Of goods confiscated

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

A trailer-load of goods was confiscated by the Customs Department yesterday after it was found that the merchandise included alcohol that had not been declared.

Officers said that as a trailer was about to be unloaded at Qormi, almost 200 cases of alcohol were found that had been brought into the country as contraband. The trailer had just reached Malta by catamaran from Sicily.

Customs officers intervened when the trailer was opened. The contents included some 3,000 cases of toilet paper, washing liquid and powder, mineral water and 198 cases of six bottles each (1,188 bottles) of whisky, vodka and rum, on which customs duty had not been paid.

Everything, including the trailer, was confiscated and the police were informed.
