On Green cooperation

Malta Independent Friday, 3 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

In the interview feature entitled; Environmentally Friendly (TMID, 30 July), Martin Galea, president of Din l-Art Helwa declared that “the main environment NGOs do cooperate and we have set up a nature group which consists of ….”, which statement seems to imply that other NGOs not forming part of this nature group have not been included due to a lack of cooperation from their part.

As a member of Moviment Graffitti, an NGO which has been relentlessly involved in environmental protection issues for a number of years, I hereby wish to clarify and reiterate that Moviment Graffitti has always cooperated with other forces in its campaigns, nonetheless it has still not been officially endorsed as part of the mentioned coalition, for reasons which remain mysterious to the movement.

To want to uphold a monopoly on environmental issues by consciously circumventing other interested NGOs is one thing; but implying that this has resulted from a lack of cooperation on their part is surely a misnomer and a gross fallacy.
